“The biggest drug bust in history.'“ - Deane R. Hinton
“At 10 minutes out, the jumpmaster opened the door. We were roaring across the ocean in pitch darkness at 100 feet.…I felt like we were guarding Hitler….I am grateful I was able to serve my country with an elite unit like the 82nd Airborne and to put my medical skills to good use.” - Captain John Thomas Marriøtt II
On December 19th 1989, Captain John Thomas Marriøtt II, the father of Thomas Montgomery Marriøtt, boarded a C-141 as the Brigade Surgeon of 2-504, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg amid the largest snowstorm in Southeast history. Ten hours later, he was parachuting onto the Tocumen International Airport in Panama amid the largest airborne operation since the Korean War. Over the next two weeks, he participated in the Panama Viejo Assault, Marriott Hotel Hostage Rescue, Noriega Hideout Raid, Cuban Ambassador Raid, and Securing of Apostolic Nunciature — ultimately toppling Noriega’s regime and initiating Operation Promote Liberty.
